What is Plastic Surgery?
I am often asked by people I meet what the 'plastic' in Plastic Surgery has to do with surgery. It's a good question considering most of the plastic we see in our day to day lives seems to have no relationship in any way to medicine. Plastic comes from a Greek word "plastikos" which means to
shape or mold. It is from this characteristic ability to be shaped that plastics get their name in fact. As plastic surgeons we shape and mold the human body to restore a function or form lost due to injury, cancer, or birth defect. We also perform cosmetic or aesthetic procedures to rejuvenate a person's appearance or help reclaim a more youthful appearing body after childbirth or large weight loss. In fact many plastic surgeons will dedicate additional training to treat
Children specifically or individual regions of the body such as the head and neck or the hand.
I am very glad to have had the opportunity to train in this exciting and diverse field, and to be in the wonderful company of plastic surgeons throughout the community.
